RIVERHEAD RACEWAY TO CELEBRATE I LOVE AMERICA NIGHT SATURDAY AUGUST 12TH WITH FIREWORKS, DEMOLITION DERBY, BIG WHEEL RACE AND SEVEN GREAT FEATURE EVENTS
by Bob Finan
Saturday August 12th at Riverhead Raceway promises to be a very patriotic night for the NASCAR Whelen All American Series as well a busy & entertaining one too. In addition to the I Love America Night Fireworks spectacular, 8-Cylinder Demolition Derby and kids Big Wheel Race track owners Eddie & Connie Partridge & Tom Gatz have scheduled seven great feature events on Donaldson's Volkswagen-Subaru night. The mighty NASCAR Modifieds will headline the stock car portion of the show with a 40-lap event as the chase for the 2017 championship hits the homestretch.
Just a month and a half back Bay Fireworks presented a stunning Fireworks show for the 4th of July show that left an everlasting impression on those on hand to witness the pyrotechnic magic. I t is expected that the Fireworks display for I Love America night will better the extravagant show six weeks ago. Music will accompany the Fireworks show and fans again will be encouraged to light up their cell phone lights at the conclusion of the Bay Fireworks show to salute our great United States of America. "Curious" George Astacio of Shirley won his first career Demolition Derby the last time out and it is expected he'll lead the 8-Cylinder Demolition Derby troops into action Saturday night.
On the NASCAR racing menu for Donaldson's VW-Subaru night the NASCAR Modifieds will again go toe to toe with veteran drivers and former multi-time champions John Fortin Sr. of Holtsville and Ton Rogers Jr. of Riverhead heading into August as the main two combatants for the 2017 title. The Eagle Auto Mall Modified Crates will compete in a 25-lap tilt and the question looms can anybody stop defending champion Dave Brigati of Calverton who going into Saturday night has won 5 of the 8 races contested to date. The Figure Eight daredevils are back for a 15-lap main event and will be joined by a 30-lapper for the Super Pro Trucks as well the INEX Legend Race Cars who will race a 20-lap feature.
It will indeed be a bust doubleheader weekend for two divisions in action on I Love America Night as the Mini Stock and Gut & Go Enduro divisions will be in action Saturday night August 12th and then again a little more than 12 hours later Sunday August 13th for the Summer Showdown Enduro race program. The distance for the Mini Stock and Gut & Go races Saturday night will be determined by cars entered the day of the race.
The popular Big Wheel Race for the kids will line up in the East West Marine Supply "Go Zone" in turn four and peddle their way towards the start/finish line with the winner of the race once again keeping the Big Wheel they won on!
All feature event winners on I Love America Night will be presented a Donaldson's Volkswagen-Subaru winners trophy from the Sayville based dealership who has served as a pace car sponsor at Riverhead Raceway since 1989. Bill Donaldson and some of his staff will be greeting all race winners in victory lane.
The entire 2017 race schedule can be found at www.riverheadraceway.com. Adult admission is $30, kids 6-12 are $10 with a free kids meal included from Fast Track Foods and under 6 are free on I Love America Night at Riverhead Raceway.
