They were three of the more prominent and beloved names in NASCAR Modified racing over the years and this Saturday night July 19th Barbara and Jim Cromarty will remember Tom Baldwin, Richie Evans and Charlie Jarzombek in a 77-lap memorial race sponsored by Axel Anderson Inc. at Riverhead Raceway. The evening will also serve as Whelen night honoring the sponsor of the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series.
Every NASCAR Modified driver who competes weekly at Riverhead Raceway has either raced against or watched "Tiger" Tom Baldwin, Richie Evans and "Charging" Charlie Jarzombek race at the three Long Island race tracks and they mark their race schedule readying for this prestigious race. Last year Chuck Steuer of Bohemia, who bought his first NASCAR Modified from Tom Baldwin some years back, won the event. Both Wayne Anderson and Howie Brode have also won this tribute race to the legendary drivers and will, like Steuer, seek to become the first repeat winner in the race. It is Anderson's heavy-duty truck repair and towing outfit, Axel Anderson Inc of Medford that will sponsor the race for the second year in a row.
Other drivers seeking the win are Bill Park, Dan Jivanelli, John Fortin, Chris Young, Justin Bonsignore, Mike Andrews Jr., David Roys and Dave Sapienza.
Time trials will determine the starting grid with the Baldwin, Evans & Jarzombek Memorial by Axel Anderson Inc. being joined by the Figure Eights, Blunderbusts, Super Pro Trucks, 4-Cylinder Enduro and One-On-One Spectator Drags.
All feature event winners will walk away with a trophy from Whelen Engineering, who not only back the nationwide NASCAR Whelen All-American Series, but the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour which stops at Riverhead Raceway for the Miller Lite Flash Tour race on Saturday evening August 2nd.
Time trials will start at 4:30 pm for the NASCAR Modifieds, with all other necessary qualifying to follow. Feature event racing goes green at 5:30 pm.
